In-situ synthesis of TiN and TiB2 compounds during reactive spark plasma sintering of BN–Ti composites

A BN-TiB2-TiN composite was produced via reactive sintering of the hexagonal BN (hBN) with 20 wt% Ti. Spark plasma (SPS) used as fabrication method and sample characterized by X-ray diffractometry, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy. According to results, Ti utterly consumed during SPS, led in-situ TiB2 TiN0.9 formations. Additionally, microstructural study revealed nucleation growth new hBN platelets from initial fine particles. Anyway, final reached a relative density 95%, because remaining free spaces between platelets. It found that some nitrogen boron atoms could leave TiN microstructures, respectively, diffuse into opposing phase.
